New Hours at Open Signal Begin Sunday, April 1

Open Signal is officially growing! We connected a whole lot more Portlanders to the magic of media and broadcast during the past year. (Peruse our annual report to learn more about how we checked out our equipment to 48% more people in 2017 over 2016.)

As more people use our services, we need to be increasingly thoughtful as an organization about how we allocate our limited resources. As we look at the numbers and hear from producers and staff, it's clear that we haven't had enough staff at the front desk during peak evening and weekend hours. 

In order to make sure we have enough people to accommodate our students and community producers during the hours they visit us the most often, we are discontinuing our morning hours and we will be closed to the public on Tuesdays. Weekend hours will stay the same. 

Beginning Sunday, April 1, Open Signal's public hours will be:  

Wednesday - Friday, 2 - 10pm 
Saturday - Sunday, Noon - 8pm

This will allow us to have a third person at the front desk during our open hours, which is not only more secure for our staff, but it also means there will be more staff available to the public when things are the busiest — to help with equipment check-out, to help producers in the studio and to answer phones and other questions.

Please note, these are the public hours that we observed before we increased hours in January of last year. We will also review our hours on a bi-annual basis, so there is potential to increase our hours again in the future.

We are making the following additional changes to lessen the impact of our new hours on producers:

• Currently, equipment is limited to a three-day check-out.
• While reservations, equipment check-outs and studios will not be available on Tuesdays and telephones will not be answered, limited services will be available in the lobby on Tuesdays from 6pm-9pm to access ingest stations in order to submit programming, and to hold meetings:
  • Computers will be available for uploading cable content.
  • The Meeting Room will be available on a first come, first served basis for meetings.
  • Additional tables can be set out in the exhibit space if people need additional places to meet.
