  • Ages: 16+
  • Total Hours: 2 (1 x 2-hour session)
  • Capacity: 12

Learn the fundamentals of filming video with your phone and start capturing footage for your social media and creative projects.

As mobile media devices improve their video, photo and audio capabilities, they become more valuable recording devices for documenting your lives and stories. You don’t need expensive equipment to start telling your story, just the phone in your hand.

Learn the fundamentals of cinematography using your smartphone in this beginner-friendly class. We’ll cover composition, lighting, audio basics, and storytelling techniques that can instantly improve your videos. You’ll also explore useful software for both iOS and Android, along with the strengths and limitations of filming on your phone.

This class is perfect for anyone curious about video production — whether you want to share stories on social media, document your community, or build skills before working with professional equipment. By the end of the session, you’ll feel confident capturing footage and ready to take the next step with classes like Editing with iMovie and Field Production with the Panasonic Camcorder.

** Note: This class is open to anyone interested in learning more about media production, no Orientation or Open Signal membership required. If cost is a barrier, please reach out to education [at] opensignalpdx.org to request a class voucher.
