Signal Share is a monthly meetup for Open Signal members to connect and collaborate! This month multimedia artists Erin and Nathan lead a beginner-friendly workshop on creating original soundtracks.
Get hands-on with the art of creating original soundtracks in this beginner-friendly workshop designed for video creators, media artists, and storytellers of all skill levels. Using GarageBand, you'll learn how to build rich, textured soundscapes and original music using only your laptop and free tools—no fancy gear required!
Led by multimedia artists Erin and Nathan, this 3-hour class will walk you through the fundamentals of digital audio workstations (DAWs) and Musical Instrument Digital Interfaces (MIDI), including:
- Navigating GarageBand’s interface and massive library of MIDI instruments and loops
- Multi-track composing with layered instruments, sound effects, imported stock audio and voice memo DIY recordings
- Syncing music and sound to video footage
- Basic audio cleanup and EQing
- Exploring using sound to enhance storytelling
Bring your own footage or use provided clips—either way, you’ll walk away with a mini-score and a toolkit of techniques to enhance your future projects. Participants will also receive a take-home PDF packed with free sound libraries, stock music sources, and tutorials to keep creating after class. Laptops provided or feel free to bring your own.
No experience necessary. Open to those with a current Open Signal membership! Donate today to keep your membership current.
