A New Chapter for Learning at Open Signal

For more than 40 years, Open Signal has been Portland’s home for free expression and community-powered storytelling. Our commitment to keeping technology, tools, and education accessible to all means that as technology and the media landscape evolve, so do we.

To expand access and sustain our programs for years to come, our classes now operate on a sliding-scale fee that starts at $30 per session. Every class reserves seats for those who aren't able to make a financial contribution, so no one is turned away for lack of funds. Access to our professional equipment library and HD television studios remains free.

And, beginning this April, we’re introducing new offerings open to anyone who wants to build confidence with media production tools and explore their creativity (no membership or Orientation required):

• Mac Basics
• Intro to Cinematography with Your Phone
• Basics of Editing with iMovie
• Podcasting

These classes focus on the fundamentals: navigating a Mac, the basics of composition and storytelling, setting up your editing projects, and basic audio routing. 

When you’re ready to start producing your own projects with the support of our equipment library, professional studios, and knowledgeable staff, become a Member and attend a Producer Orientation. Orientation helps you identify the right path for your creative goals and understand the opportunities available to you at Open Signal. 

As an Open Signal Producer, you get access to additional classes focused on our professional production equipment, including Intro to Studio Production, Field Production with the Panasonic Camcorder, and Editing with Final Cut Pro X. These classes certify you to check out professional-grade equipment without the fees you’d find at commercial rental houses. 

Becoming an Open Signal Producer means joining a community of creators, storytellers, activists, and dreamers. You'll move your projects forward using our shared resources, and we'll help you share your completed work with the world through our cable channels. You're also invited to connect with other Producers through events and volunteer opportunities that spark collaboration and hands-on learning.

Start wherever feels right to you: take a fundamentals class, or become a Producer to kick start your journey. Whether you want to explore, build new skills, or produce your own content, we're here to support you every step of the way.
