'Transit' by manuel arturo abreu

'Transit' by manuel arturo abreu

Open Signal is pleased to announce the third solo show by Fall 2017 New Media Fellow manuel arturo abreu, 'Transit.'

'Transit' showcases the efforts of abreu's New Media fellowship and includes sound, video, sculpture and publication meditating on opacity, limbo, and recirculation. The exhibition continues abreu's practice of 'upcycling' — that is, repurposing and recontextualizing older work.

Databending — manipulation of a file with a program meant to edit other file formats — frames the show. The exhibition also includes a self-published collection of abreu's freelance art writing exclusive to the exhibition, which focalizes the tension between commercialism and community inherent to a digital practice today.

Audiences will also be able to browse the archived streams of the first two years of curricular programming for home school, a free pop-up art school which abreu co-facilitates.

Finally, in four new video works, abreu appropriates YouTube videos of transit through Southeast Portland and the Bronx — their home neighborhood of Norwood, as well as Morris Ave — and adds subtitles featuring poetry and critical theory.

manuel arturo abreu was an Open Signal New Media Fellow during the fall of 2017. This program is supported by the Regional Arts and Culture Council.
