Apply now for the Youth Media Collective and explore journalism, storytelling, media arts, and wellbeing through hands-on media production.

Are you a young person interested in storytelling, journalism, filmmaking, or creating media that reflects your community and experiences? Open Signal’s Youth Media Collective is a 6-month, collaborative media arts and journalism program for Portland-area youth ages 14–18 who want to build creative skills, explore content creation, and tell stories that matter.

Through hands-on training and mentorship, you’ll learn:

  • Journalism
  • Storytelling and interviewing
  • Cinematography and field production
  • Broadcast studio production
  • Video editing and graphics
  • How to give and receive creative feedback
  • How media connects to mental health and community wellbeing

Work together to produce original stories for the Youth Media Collective’s news program while developing technical and creative skills in a supportive, inclusive environment.

As part of this program, you’ll become an Open Signal producer, meaning you get access to:

  • Free year-long Open Signal membership
  • Free access to professional video production equipment and studios
  • Opportunities to share your content on Open Signal channels and streaming platforms

The Collective will also collaborate with local community organizations so that you can expand your creative and professional network.

This program is designed for young people who are excited to explore media production, editing, journalism, and creative storytelling.

The next Youth Media Collective cohort starts in August and runs through January.
