Learn the essentials of studio TV production in this hands-on class for Open Signal Producers + get certified to produce your own content in our HD studios.
Open Signal’s state-of-the-art television studios are unique venues for free speech and creative expression. In this three-session class for Open Signal Producers, you’ll gain hands-on training with the professional tools and techniques used to produce multi-camera television.
Each session focuses on a different aspect of studio production, including lighting, cameras, audio, and control room operations. You’ll learn how a studio crew works together to capture live or recorded programs, and practice the roles that bring a production to life.
After completing the class and volunteering on at least one studio production, you’ll become Studio Certified — giving you the ability to reserve time in Open Signal’s HD television studios to produce your own content with a crew.
Session 1: Studio Lighting and Cameras, Microphones
Learn how to set up and shape light for studio productions using floor lights, the lighting board, and cyclorama lights. You’ll also explore techniques for lighting talent and green screen setups. Instructors will introduce the cameras used in both studios, including robotic camera operation and safe use of camera pedestals. The session also covers the basics of studio microphones, how they work, and best practices for microphone placement.
Session 2: Studio Audio and Mixers, Technical Direction
Dive into the control room and learn how studio productions are directed. This session introduces the studio audio mixers, sound-checking basics, and safe cable management. You’ll also explore how video signals move through the switcher and how Technical Directors shape the flow and style of a production. Learn the language of directing, including common hand signals used on set, and get introduced to adding graphics with Xpressions and other key control room tools.
Session 3: Review and Production Practice
Put your new skills into action by working together as a crew to produce a 30–45 minute studio program. Guided by our Studio Productions Coordinator & Trainer, you’ll rotate through key roles and gain practical experience running a show from start to finish.
Note: Registration for this class is limited to Open Signal Producers. To become a Producer, activate your membership and attend one of our Producer Orientations.

Instructor
As the Studio Productions Trainer & Technician, I am here to ensure that your studio productions are a success. I can help you with everything from reserving your gear to answering (and solving) your HD studio questions.
I currently teach the Studio Production Certification class, and am proficient in all of the gear that we have in our equipment library so feel free to reach out with any technical questions. I'm more of a Star Wars guy than a Star Trek guy, but I've been known to hang out with a few Trekkies.
